Listed as a property on the US National Register of Historic Places, the Old Chicago Water Tower is a popular attraction in Chicago, and the second oldest water tower in the United States. With the surrounding neighborhood named after the building, the landmark is located along the Magnificent Mile in the Old Chicago Water Tower District. The tower was originally built in 1869 to store and draw water from Lake Michigan, but was later restored after the Great Chicago Fire As the only public building surviving the fire, the building immediately gained prominence and became a symbol of old Chicago and its recovery from the disaster. The building now serves as a Chicago Office of Tourism Art Gallery, and was most recently featured in the finale of The Amazing Race 6.
